Afew Important Notes
====================
This game runs on PAL Amigas only.It won't work on NTSC machines.
This game was written in 100% assembler, making extensive use of the
blitter for nearly all of the graphics routines, and as such, runs at 50 frames
per second.
All timing loops use the video blank,so there should be no problems
with faster processor cards, and all OS calls are legal (no nasty ROM jumps)
so will work on 1.2 (although it hasn't been tested on it),1.3,2.0 and AGA
versions of Workbench. It does not use any external files like libraries
or device drivers etc,and so will work when booted from any floppy. It will
also work on 512K machines, provided the music data file selected is small
enough to fit into memory.512K users are probably best off running this
program from this disk rather than from the workbench,as more memory will
be available.
Alot of amiga users now have hard disks,so this game can be
copied and run from hard disk.Boot your hard disk up as normal. Then
create a drawer on your hard disk where you want to copy the game to,and
open it.Put the game disk into the drive and double click on it.Then drag
the icons to the opened hard disk drawer.
Since I'm not a very good musician and the fact that most game tunes
can get abit monotonous after a while, this program allows you to select which
tune you want it to play each time you start the game.It should play any
soundtracker, noisetracker or protracker MODULES.Channel 0 is also used for
the sound effects,so bare this in mind when writing tunes.Even if you don't
want to write your own tunes,a number of tunes have been put on this disk,
most of which are already on the public domain, but even if you get bored
with these, there are numerous other soundtracker/noisetracker/protracker PD
modules about.Ask your local PD library for details.
This game will run from this disk automatically after you have read
these instructions, but if you wish to install it to hard disk and run it from
there or you wish to change the default tune, then you need to run the game
from the CLI or shell,by typing:
GemZ <music filename>
As an example of this, the command which runs the game is of the form
GemZ df0:modules/mod.GemZ
Where mod.GemZ is the tune in the modules directory on df0:.Don't forget to
specify the path if your own modules are on different disks,ie if you are
running from hard disk and the module you wanted was called mod.newtune on
the floppy disk in drive df1:,you would type:
GemZ df1:mod.newtune
The program will inform you of any error you may make.If you get an
out of memory error, the music module which you selected was probably too
long to fit into memory. In this case, try a shorter tune.If you don't want
music whilst playing the game, then don't bother typing a music file name.
Just type:
GemZ
The program also needs to save high score tables and other things
to disk,so make sure the disk is WRITE ENABLED (so the tab at the top of
the disk covers the hole). If it isn't,a file requester will appear telling
you so.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
This game is freely distributable by any means (ie.post,BBS,PD libraries etc)
as long as the following points are adhered to:
(1) All of the files must be included in their original form without
additions, deletions or modifications of any kind.
(2) None of the files may be sold commercially for any reason
whatsoever.
(3) None of the files may appear on any electronic service or
otherwise, that claims copyright to uploaded programs.
(4) None of the files may appear on any magazine disk or similar
for mass distribution without prior consent from me.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disclaimer: (just to keep the lawyers at bay !!)
You use this program entirely at your own risk.I accept no
responsibility for any damage done to software or hardware during its use.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note to distributors (PD libraries etc)
=======================================
The files on this disk are not compressed.Feel free to compress them
but if you do,make sure that all decompression tools are provided with the
release.i.e include ppmore or muchmore_pp,preferably both,if you crunch the
text files with Powerpacker.
You can distribute these files however you like, whether they go onto
a game compilation disk or whatever,so long as all files in this release are
kept together and they aren't modified in any way.
The music data files are not part of this release, and so do not have
to appear on compilation disks, but at least one tune should be present.

ABOUT THE GAME
==============
(NOTE: 'Clicking' in this text refers to pressing the left mouse button)
This is another one of those annoyingly addictive puzzle games
loved by everyone who buys PD stuff (well, most people anyway !!!)
Two grids containing GemZ will be displayed. The grid on the right
has been altered by the computer and the object is to make the grid on the
left identical to that on the right. This is done by pressing the left mouse
button on individual GemZ.This in turn will make the GemZ Change colour.
In the middle of the screen between the two grids is the order in which the
GemZ change colour. How each Gem changes colour will depend on which game
level you are playing. In the easiest level, the Gem which is clicked on
changes to the one which is two places lower down. The adjacent GemZ will
change one place lower. If the bottom of the list is reached, then the Gem
will disintegrate, and all GemZ above it will fall down to fill the gaps
(like Tetris). The order in which the GemZ change colour is shown below.
Tricky: Gem clicked on changes by 2 colours, adjacent GemZ change by one
colour
010
121
010
Hard: Gem clicked on changes by 2 colours, all surrounding GemZ change by
one colour
111
121
111
Harder: Gem clicked on changes by 3 colours, all surrounding GemZ change by
1 colour, except the adjacent GemZ which change by 2 colours
121
232
121
The order in which the GemZ change colour is also displayed at the
bottom of the options page. The order in which they change colour can be
changed by clicking on the icon. This makes the game slightly more difficult
if you have been playing for a while and are used to the GemZ changing in
a particular order. There is no way of restoring the original Gem order, even
by switching off your computer and starting again,so use this option wisely.
The Game level is also selected from the Options Screen,by clicking
on one of the icons. From here you can also Return to AmigaDOS by clicking on
the exit button.Click on the OK icon when you are ready to play.
The number of times the computer has altered a Gem in the manner
described above is indicated under 'Min Moves' on the screen. This is the
minimum number of moves required to finish the level. You will get 30
seconds of time for each move made by the computer,so if the Min Moves is
3,then you will get 1 minute and 30 second to complete the level.
If you feel you have made a mistake, click on the 'U' Undo icon and
this will undo you previous move.Since all game activity is recorded,
clicking on the Undo icon repeatedly will eventually restore the grid to
its initial state. Each undo is counted as an extra move. The 'P' icon is to
Pause the game.Clicking on this will blank the screen and the timer will
stop.Click the left mouse button again to resume playing. The 'X' icon is
to eXit or abort the current game.
Once each level is completed you will be awarded points
corresponding to the time remaining and the current game level you are
playing at.The easiest game (tricky) will award you 1 point for each
second remaining, the middle game level (Hard) will award you 2 points
and the hardest will award 3 points for each second of time left.If you
manage to complete the grid using the minimum required moves, the points
awarded will be doubled. You can only achieve this bonus by perfectly
matching the computer moves, which means completely avoiding the Undo icon.
The game will get progressively more difficult as the computer
changes more and more GemZ,and the patterns become more and more
complicated
If you run out of time, you will lose one of your five lives.Once
all 5 lives have been used up,it's game over.If you're lucky enough to
get a high score, you will be presented with the chance to enter your name.
This is done via the keyboard.Press Return after doing so to update the high
score table, and click the left mouse button to return to the options page.
Have Fun !!!!!!

Shareware: Who?,What?,How?,Why?,Where?,When?
As mentioned above, this game is shareware. If you like it,you are
encouraged to send me a donation. This only covers the time it took me to
write the game;the actual software itself is free.If I get a good response
from this, there maybe other games on the way.Any comments on this game are
welcome,as are ideas for games which you'd like to see on PD which aren't
currently available.
This version is slightly cut down in the fact that there is a 15
timer for each game. This should be OK for beginners, but may cause
experienced players some problems. Also there are only afew of the millions
of Gem patterns in this version.
People who become registered users will get an updated copy of this
game without the timer and all the other goodies, and possible my next game
(if I do one),and advice on how to play this game,or the Amiga. For instance,
the source code for this game is available, along with some other smallish
pieces of demo code for budding assembler programmers. Please state when you
register if you need this stuff. If you do,your minimum donation should be
ú5:00 to cover disk costs (2 or 3 of them) and first class post and my time.
The address to send stuff to is:
Tony Hosier,

P.S - If you're going to send cheques and the like, please make them payable
to A.Hosier,as Tony is just a shortening I prefer.
